Exclusive Interview with Ononi – Women’s Month Special

In today’s Exclusive Interview, we have Nigerian singer-songwriter Ononi on our E-seat. She shares her journey as an artist, her creative inspirations, and how she’s navigating the music industry. Ononi talks about the stories behind her music, the unique essence of her sound, and what Women’s Month means to her. She also reveals some fun facts and gives us a glimpse of what’s next in her career.

Let’s get to know Ononi beyond the music.



Q: The name Ononi is quite unique. What’s the story behind it?
A: “Ononi is one special name my mum gave me when I was much younger. It means my Ononse, as my full b name is Ononse.”

Q: How did your journey into music begin?
A: “⁠I have this friend who we went to school together, we weren’t close much in school but after school I found out he makes beats and just as we were speaking one day he sent me a beat. Also, I use to write short poems and stories so I tried turning a poem I wrote into a song and it felt like it was meant to be😅”

Q: Your sound carries a distinct and soulful vibe. How would you describe your music in your own words?
A: “I’ll describe my music as soothing to the soul”

Q: Your songs Selense and Mental Case with Lysense are such a favorite. How has the reception been so far?
A: “The reception has been amazing to be honest, those two are definitely top pick.”

Q: What’s a song of yours that holds deep personal meaning, and what inspired it?
A: “I would say ‘Ride The Waves’. Errm it was an inspired by a breakup actually. Moving forward from that relationship it made me understand that life throw things at you, but you have to ride the waves.”

Q: Selense is off an album or is it an EP? Can you tell us more about the project?
A: “Selense is part of my latest EP called ‘Lover And A Fighter’, The Ep is circles around a number of emotions but mostly love and war.”

Q: Any experience that has shaped you as a person and as a musician?
A: “I can’t pinpoint a particular experience that shaped me as a person and as a musician, I have to say that is of a collation of experiences.”

Q: Are there any dream collaborations we should be expecting or that you desire?
A: “Yeahh, Imma name 3 artist I can’t wait to be on a song with; Ayra Star, Victony, Majeed!”

Q: Any female collaborations you hope to see or be a part of?
A: “Abuja female artists really should collaborate more, so I hope to make songs with the likes Hennie The Creator, Kitschai, Mannie Tseayo”

Q: What does Women’s Month mean to you?
A: “Women’s month is a month set to show love, appreciation and acknowledgement of all women and their roles in the society and world at large.”

Q: What is the sweetest thing a woman has ever done for you, and what is something you have done to make a woman’s life easier?
A: “The sweetest thing I think a woman has ever done for me was to take care and nurture me, shout out to my Mama, and I think the sweetest thing I have done for a woman is show loyalty and support.”

Q: What’s one thing you hope for women in music?
A: “I hope that women in the music industry would find fulfillment in their music, on whatever scale and treat their talents as a big deal.”

Q: Share with us a secret no one would have guessed
A: “⁠I wanted to be an automobile engineer”

Q: Rings or Anklets?
A: “Rings for sure”

Q. What is your Women’s Month motto?
A: “I don’t have a motto”
