On The E-Seat: Exclusive Interview With Remmi

Interviewed & Published By Scout Booth

In today’s exclusive interview from Scout Booth, we have Remmi on our E-Seat.

She’s a Ghanaian artist and student studying Automobile Engineering. Remmi talks about her music, the story behind her hit “For Your Love,” and how she balances school and music. She also shares funny stories, her inspirations, and what’s next for her.

Let’s get into it!

Remmi

Scout Booth: Good morning Remmi, how are you doing today?

Remmi: “I’m doing very well, thank you.”

Scout Booth: Your name Remmi, means what? Is it like your government name or what?

Remmi: “Remmi was chosen as a stage name because it means remedy and I want my music to serve as a remedy for those who listen to it.”

Scout Booth: Okayyyy, this is interesting. Do you know people bear Remmi in Nigeria as well?

Remmi: “Oh, really? I didn’t know that.”

Scout Booth: Oh yes, we do. The Yoruba tribe bear the name Remi, though it is mostly never spelt with double M. And it is usually a prefix or suffix like Remilekun or Oluwaremi etc.

Remmi: “Oh wow, that’s nice.”

Scout Booth: Right. Also, it means “console” or something along that line.

Remmi: “Yhhh, that’s right.”

Scout Booth: Yeah it is, and it’s beautiful to see that even in another country and tribe, the name still relatively means the same thing. So what’s your government name?

Remmi: “Enchill Angela Newton.”

Scout Booth: Wow, you do have such a beautiful name and I must tell, you have got a beautiful voice as well. And before we dive fully into the interview, I just want to say congratulations on your new release “For Your Love.” Such a brilliant record, and it made it to the May 2025 edition of the SHE Art iT playlist!

How did it feel seeing your song on there?

Remmi: “Honestly, I was so excited and happy that my hardwork was recognised.”

Scout Booth: The ‘SHE Art iT playlist’ only houses promising underground gems. What do you think it is about your sound that connects with women and music lovers alike?

Remmi: “I think my songs show a strong young woman who is not afraid of taking control and voicing out how they feel, whether it’s about love or life.”

Scout Booth: That is beautiful. Now, let’s take it from the heart, what does music mean to you personally?

Remmi: “Music means a lot to me. Music is the only way I get to express and communicate how I feel. Music calms me down and gets me in the right state of mind.”

Scout Booth: From what we’ve noticed, your songs often speak on love and emotions. What inspires your writing the most? Is it personal experiences, imagination, or stories from others?

Remmi:The inspiration comes from both personal experiences and imagination buh mostly personal experiences.”

Scout Booth: That’s jig. Your sound blends elements of R&B, soul, and Afro-fusion. How do you describe your genre, and how do you stay authentic while blending different styles?

Remmi: “I think Afro Fusion and Afropop are the best descriptions for my sound as these genres allow the blend of these genres I tend to mix.”

Scout Booth: What’s your creative process like? Do you start with lyrics, melody, or freestyle your way into a song?

Remmi: “I don’t have a particular creative process, I mostly start with the melodies, continue with the lyrics and freestyle my way into the song.”

Scout Booth: Let’s talk about ‘For Your Love’ what’s the story behind that record?

Remmi: “I wouldn’t say there is a story behind ‘For your love’, I would rather say there are emotions behind the song. A strong desire for someone I love.”

Scout Booth: Ouuu, I like that. What do you want people to feel or take away after listening to your music?

Remmi:I want people to feel loved and wanted whenever they listen to ‘For your Love.’”

Scout Booth: What’s one lyric you’ve written that made you pause and say, “Yeah… I did that”?

Remmi: That would be an unreleased song, and I quote;

Tell me what is this I feel

somebody explain anxiety for me

this atmosphere of unease’”

Scout Booth: Have you ever written a song based on a real situation?

Remmi: “Yes, several times. All my songs are about what I go through.”

Scout Booth: So have you ever made a song and changed a few things to make it sound deeper? I mean have you ever “lied” a little for the art?

Remmi: “Not necessarily a lie, a little art as you said.”

Scout Booth: We hear lots of artists talk about regrets. And we would just like to know, have you made a song you never wanted anyone to hear, or maybe still regret releasing?

Remmi: “No, I haven’t done that so far.”

Scout Booth: You’re starting to get attention from the Nigerian music space. How does that make you feel?

Remmi: “The sense of belonging gives me butterflies. I love Nigeria so much and can’t wait to be there one day.”

Scout Booth: So you have never been to Nigeria? But do you have Nigerian friends?

Remmi: “Never been to Nigeria, buh yes I have a couple of Nigerian friends.”

Scout Booth: That’s nice! So would you love to work with any Nigerian artists soon? Who?

Remmi: Yes, I would love to work with Tariq and Boypee.”

Scout Booth: That would be so nice. I can forseee it being a jam already.

Remmi: “right”

Scout Booth: Can you describe your music journey using one Ghanaian food and one Nigerian food.

Remmi:Okay, I would say fufu and palm nut soup, and eba with okra soup.”

Scout Booth: And why those two foods?

Remmi:Because the making of these foods requires a lot of skills and work, buh the results is worth it.

Scout Booth: Okay, settle this for us once and for all: Ghanaian or Nigerian jollof? 😄

Remmi: “Haha, since I haven’t tried Nigerian jollof before, I can’t judge. Buh then Ghanaian jollof is delectable.”

Scout Booth: Oh wow you should try it soon and see the light. So Remmi how is life in general? I mean you’re also studying Automobile Engineering right? How do you balance music with your academics, and do these two worlds ever influence each other?

Remmi: “School and music together is tough, buh music is me and that’s what I love to do, so I do well to balance both even though it gets hard sometimes.”

Scout Booth: What’s one thing people always assume about you that’s totally false?

Remmi: “At first sight, some people think I’m a boy, which I think is crazy, cos omo I too fine oo haha.”

Scout Booth: What’s the weirdest DM you’ve ever received?

Remmi: “I think it’s a typical thing women face on social media, unsolicited advances from men with errm… some stuff.”

Scout Booth: *Sigh* What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done for love?

Remmi: “I starved to save up some money to get them a birthday present. Make una no come for me oo biko na lover girl I be.”

Scout Booth: If your love life was a genre, what would it be, and why?

Remmi: “Soul music, because it conveys deep emotions.”

Scout Booth: If your music had a smell, what would it be?

Remmi: Roses.”

Scout Booth: What’s the most touching thing a fan has ever said or done for you?

Remmi: “A fan once told me they can’t sleep without listening to my music.”

Scout Booth: Awwwn, that’s actually a booster, I love it. Are you currently independent or signed to a label?

Remmi:Currently independent.”

Scout Booth: What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as an artist and what do you think can help change things?

Remmi: “I would say financial problems, having creative ideas buh not having the financial capacity to bring them to reality.”

Scout Booth: Okay, quick one: Be underrated forever or go viral once and disappear?

Remmi: “Choosing the second, because after the clout I would be recognised if my name is mentioned somewhere.”

Scout Booth: What’s one side of Remmi the world hasn’t seen yet but will very soon?

Remmi:The Remmi that has other subjects to talk about aside love.”

Scout Booth: Last words to your fans, what should they expect next, and what’s something you wish they knew about you?

Remmi: I love my fans so much and I’m grateful for how far they have brought me. Expect nothing buh the best.”
